History (1992): Seagate Ships 210MB 2.5-Inch HDD ($795 for OEMs)

And its first 1.8-inch units up to 80MB ($495 for OEMs)

Seagate Technology (Scotts Valley, CA) has begun shipping the latest addition to its line of 2.5-inch HDDs, the 209.7MB (formatted) ST9235A.

The power consumption is .16W in a standby and sleep modes, and 1.7W in R/W mode.

Last October, Seagate brought to market the ST9144, a 3-platter, 2.5-inch disk drive with a capacity of 127MB (formatted), currently in volume production.

St9235a

The ST9235A, also a 3-platter product, has enhanced capabilities. It incorporates a unique feature that, according to Seagate, places the heads in the latched position away from the data zone while in the idle mode. These features, coupled with the 88b on the fly ECC design, enhance the drive’s reliability and data integrity. The 19mm high drive features a 16ms average seek time, an industry-standard AT interface and a non-operating shock of 150G. The drive also features 64KB multi-segmented adaptive cache. Samples are available, and volume production quantities will ship calendar quarter three. The OEM evaluation prices for the ST9235A is currently slated at $795.

Seagate also launched its premier line of 1.8-inch HDDs and announced the availability of evaluation units for the products family’s first member. The ST7000 line features formatted capacities of 40, 65 and 80MB. Future drives in the product family will support the PCMCIA memory card interface and feature single and dual disks, low voltage operation of 3.3V, 10mm heights and improvements in ruggedness.

St7075

The first member is the ST7075, a 2-disk drive measuring 12.5mm high, with an AT interface and an average seek time of 16ms. This drive features an advanced 50% nanoslider, internally produced by Seagate, and a resistance to non-operating and operating shock of respectively 250G and up to 20G. The drive uses 1.3W in R/W mode, .13W in standby mode and .09W in sleep mode. In addition, the ST7075 has an MTBF of 250,000 hours, and a 27dBA acoustic noise level. It is priced at $495 in OEM evaluation quantities. Production quantities is currently scheduled for 4Q92.
