SC19: Mellanox to Accelerate Eni HPC Platform

Oil and gas company with 200Gb HDR IB to connect 52 petaflops compute platform and 15PB storage system.

Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. announced that 200Gb HDR IB has been selected by Eni S.p.A., a global energy company, to accelerate HPC5 – the most powerful industrial HPC.

Mellanox To Accelerate Eni Supercomputing Platform

The HPC5 HPC will deliver 3 times higher performance compared to the existing 100Gb EDR IB HCP4 HPC platform. It will allow generating faster data analysis during Eni operations, and will further accelerate R&D of non-fossil energy sources, as well as support exploration, development and monitoring of oil fields during all stages.

HPC5 will deliver 52-petaflop of computing performance utilizing both CPUs and GPUs, and 15PB of storage, all connected in a full non-blocking 200Gb HDR IB topology to ensure efficient and direct connection among every compute server and storage system.

Claudio Descalzi, CEO, Eni commented: “Our investment to strengthen our HPC infrastructure and to develop proprietary technologies are a crucial part of the digital transformation of Eni. Having great computing power and sophisticated algorithms at our disposal makes us leaders in the modern energy sector and projects us on to the future. Eni is forging that future through a range of alternative energy projects, and through a solid R&D investment plan. With HPC5, we are entering the world of Exascale computing in the energy sector, which will revolutionize company processes in the future.

IB performance advantages have accelerated Eni supercomputing platforms over the years, and we are excited to see our HDR IB solutions empower the new supercomputing system, enabling Eni with the world-leading industrial supercomputing power,” said Amir Prescher, SVP of end-user sales and business development, Mellanox. “Thanks to HDR IB’s interconnect leadership, its smart acceleration engines for high performance, data intensive and deep learning applications, and being a standard technology ensuring backward and future compatibility, Eni is equipped with the capabilities to gain further competitive advantage, and to build a supercomputing infrastructure that serves their current and future needs.
