History (1990): Dataquest Forecasts HDDs to Become Ahead of Storage Peripherals in Future

Beating finally FDDs, tape and optical drives

According to Dataquest, HDDs are promised to a fine future and finally won’t be threatened by new technologies like optical disks and high-capacity floppy disks.

In value, the share of HDDs in the entire storage market will only drop 3% from 1989 to 1993, from 76.6 to 73.7%.

Of course, in number of units, FDDs will still be ahead but, in 1993, Dataquest estimates that 40 million FDDs will be sold, just about as then HDDs, 35 million.

A remarkable growth is expected in optical disk drives while sales of tape units remain steady.
