LensVid.com Customer of Asustor NAS and Seagate HDDs

LensVid.com, a site for anybody who loves photography, has deployed Asustor AS4004T and Seagate’s IronWolf Pro to have fast access to all of their data from several computers 24/7 regardless if computers are on or off.

LensVid no longer worries about running out of storage for the foreseeable future and knows that an Asustor NAS can upgrade storage to higher capacities. LensVid also can collaborate on projects located on the NAS without needing to move them for editing, while also enabling them to remove HDDs from work computers to increase silence as the drives are no longer in the same room with recording equipment. LensVid also makes use of the variety of apps available for Asustor NAS devices, including, but not limited to EZ Sync, which allows data to be synchronized between computers and the NAS, regardless of whether the NAS is nearby or not.

LensVid has been using a combination of internal and external solutions to manage their growing database of videos and images. The system used, often reaches its limits and it is looking use even more data per week than at present with 4K60 footage and possibly even 6K footage in the next few years.

There are also other challenges. High capacity HDDs are noisy while SSD don’t provide enough cost effective to cover their needs, LensVid must rely on mechanical drives for the foreseeable future.

Since LensVid records all of their voice overs for videos in the same room as the computer, LensVid needs to have as little noise as possible and a DAS solution with mechanical HDDs their computer is just too noisy.

Another challenge that LensVid has been facing is with simultaneous work on editing videos. Having more than one person working on a video required moving large files back and forth between computers which slows down their workflow and storing information on a DAS is only accessible to the computer the DAS is connected to.

To overcome these challenges LensVid needs the following:  

• A high-capacity storage solution of over 20TB with protection.
• Fast enough for two video editors to work on 4K files from two separate locations.
• Silence or at least a simple way of making the device silent when recording.
• A way to access data remotely when working offsite.

LensVid has done research into many of the existing solutions on the market. Most, if not all, were either inadequate in terms of their basic requirements, including, but not limited to poor performance, insufficient capacity, loud or poor value for money.

LensVid has found that the AS4004T proved that it can provide speeds for at least 2 people simultaneously editing 4K files on its 10GbE connection as well as being small enough to move the drives away from the recording studio, mitigating audio interference all while providing an excellent value for money. It also likes the 3-year warranty which gives piece of mind when it comes to their data as well as additional protection from Seagate’s IronWolf Pro drives which have a five year warranty and two years of data rescue services in the event of total failure.
