In this paper we have identified security of data as the cornerstone of data protection. So we have focused on the measures and best practices needed to achieve a desired level of security for data, for example key management, root of trust, authentication, access control, and audit and monitoring. We have also described the best practices for several domains that fall under the umbrella term of data protection, for example data privacy, data confidentiality and data integrity, as well as a number of adjacent domains that rely on security mechanisms to achieve their objectives, for example data residency and electronic discovery and holds.
