Following lawsuit between Sony and FujiFilm on tape media
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on June 4, 2019 at 2:28 pmBackupWorks.com, Inc., distributor of storage hardware and media, said that IBM withdraws select Ultrium 8 12TB data cartridge models and features from US only, with replacements (LTO-7) available effective April 23, 2018.
On or after the effective date of withdrawal, you can no longer order these products directly from IBM.
As we understand it, this relates to a lawsuit between Sony Corporation and FujiFilm Corporation. If you’re using LTO-8 tape media, we urge you to buy additional quantities right now to see you through the next two quarters at least as very limited quantities are available.
Fujifilm received a favorable Final Determination in its United States International Trade Commission (ITC) case against Sony.
The ITC affirmed the ruling by administrative law judge David P. Shaw in favor of issuing a limited exclusion order and a cease and desist order directed at Sony and its affiliates. It found that Sony is unlawfully importing into the United States certain magnetic storage cartridge products that infringe a Fujifilm U.S. patent.
