IBM Storage Networking SAN384C-6 helps address the stringent needs and requirements of large, virtualized data environments

IBM Storage Networking SAN384C-6 is designed to meet enterprise data center and SAN scalability requirements while managing TCO.

To meet such requirements, model 8978-E08 is designed to deliver:

  • Performance: SAN384C-6 offers port densities of up to 384 32Gb FC ports per chassis, 1.5Tb/s) FC performance per slot, up to 24Tb/s FC line rate, nonblocking system-level switching, functionality with intelligent fabric services, virtual SANs (VSANs) for consolidating individual physical SAN islands while maintaining logical boundaries, and Inter-VSAN Routing (IVR) for sharing resources across VSANs.
  • Reliability: It is designed to deliver high level of availability and reliability. It is a director-class switch to enable redundancy on all major components including fabric modules. It provides grid redundancy on power supply and 1+1 redundant supervisors. Users can add an additional fabric card to enable N+1 fabric redundancy.
  • Flexibility: It is designed to combine nondisruptive software upgrades, stateful process restart and failover, and redundancy of all major components for availability. With up to 24Tb/s of FC system bandwidth and 384 2/4/8/16/32Gb/s full line rate autosensing FC ports in a single chassis, it can scale to meet the requirements of the large data center storage environments.

SAN384C-6 enables enterprise clouds, and also business transformation. By adding enterprise connectivity options that support FICON, it delivers a performing and reliable FICON infrastructure designed to support fast and scalable z Systems servers. IBM Storage networking c-type platform also provides multiprotocol flexibility for SANs delivering 32Gb and 16Gb FC and 1/10 FC over IP (FCIP) capabilities.

Key prerequisites

  • SAN384C-6 supports FC connectivity. The 8978-E08 model supports all features and functions listed, and requires NX-OS software release 8.1(b), or later.
  • NX-OS software release 8.1(b) is required for FICON support.
