History (Late 1970s): QIC Minicartridge

Designed by 3M for use in Hewlett Packard calculator systems

This article was published by the Museum of Obsolete Media.

QIC Minicartridge (late 1970s-mid 1990s)

QIC (Quarter Inch Cartridge) Minicartridge was a smaller variant of the original QIC Data Cartridge, and was used mostly for personal computers due to its low cost and small form factor (internal drives fitted into a 3.5-inch drive bay).

It was designed in the late 1970s by 3M for use in Hewlett Packard calculator systems. HP went on to develop their own tape system out of this, the DC100.

Travan, a variation of of the QIC Minicartridge with more tape and greater capacities, superseded it.
