Benchmark Results for Intel Server Platforms and Optane by Evaluator Group and IOmark

With VMware vSAN storage software besting previous price performance "by 308%"

Evaluator Group, Inc. announces new record IOmark-VM benchmark results for Intel S2600WT server platforms with VMware, Inc.vSAN storage software as a hyperconverged system.

IOmark-VM-HC is a benchmark that certifies systems for virtual server results. The measurement criteria are storage performance, with the restriction that all storage workloads must be supported by the tested hyperconverged system.

The Intel Corp.‘s based hyperconverged system comprised of four Xeon Scalable processor servers, together with Optane SSD storage and VMware vSAN software achieved results of 1,152 IOmark-VMs at a price of $216.23/IOmark-VM. Prior results were $468,75 per VM.

The new Intel Xeon systems with Optane and vSAN produced the highest results for a 4-node hyperconverged system tested to date and most importantly the price / performance results were the best we have seen, achieving a record low value per IOmark-VM,” said Russ Fellows, senior partner, Evaluator Group. “The simplicity of hyperconverged with leading efficiency compared to other hyperconverged and traditional systems is a compelling value proposition.

Using Intel based server platforms and Optane along with VMware vSAN software-defined storage provides a flexible model for enterprise computing and hyper-converged solutions. With the scale-out architecture, adding additional nodes scales CPU, memory and storage capacity and performance capabilities for the entire system. Server-based storage systems can provide high levels of performance along with economic benefits as shown by the leading price/performance levels achieved during testing.

The IOmark benchmark results are audited to ensure uniform testing and reporting of results, enabling IT users to compare products using metrics that matter: price, capacity and application performance. The application mix for IOmark-VM includes databases, webservers and Exchange mail servers, plus hypervisor operations consisting of a VM clone, deploy, boot, software upgrade, and storage migration between storage volumes.

IOmark has established benchmark criteria for  IOmark-VM workload.
Performance requirements are established as follows:

  • Workloads are scaled in sets of eight workloads

  • Average response time for each application must not exceed 30ms

  • 70% of response times for I/Os must not exceed 20ms

  • Replay time must complete within one hour and 15s for each one hour workload

The company is the developer of IOmark, a software test platform that may be licensed to use for validation and POC testing. Vendors, performance testing labs and channel partners may purchase the tool to use in their lab and for publishing audited results. IT end users may purchase a discounted license. An evaluation license may be obtained for 30 days for internal trials.

Intel performance results with Optane and Xeon processor performance and information about IOmark-VM are available at the IOmark website.
