History (1994): QIC-Wide From Sony

Variant of QIC Minicartridge using wider 8mm tape

This article was published by the Museum of Obsolete Media.

QIC-Wide (1994-2000s)

QIC-Wide was a variant of QIC Minicartridge that used wider 8mm (0.315 inch) tape along with increased recording density, in a shell with the same dimensions as the QIC Minicartridge.

It was introduced by Sony in 1994.

Like the QIC Minicartridge, the main market was PC and client/server network backups. QIC-Wide tapes had a capacity of up to 4GB (compressed).

QIC-Wide drives were backwards-compatible with some other QIC tapes such as Travan and QIC Minicartridge.
