Confirmation of Emerging SaaS Backup Trend

Initiated by small vendors, now addressed by established ones

SaaS Backup is clearly a new direction for storage and data management vendors illustrating the role and adoption of enterprise SaaS applications.

It’s now the case for NetApp with its new SaaS Backup offering launched last week at NetApp Insight conference, first available for Office 365 and soon for Salesforce. It is an internal development and not based on external solutions or partnerships.

Pretty interesting to see NetApp jumps into that opportunity confirming its end-to-end cloud strategy and without any partner solutions as they partner with Commvault.

Today the offering, available by subscription at $3.75 per user per month with unlimited capacity, supports Office 365, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.

Recently Commvault announced its Backup and Restore as-a-Service during its Go conference.

A few months before Asigra, Acronis, Druva, Synology, Veeam and Veritas have unveiled strategies and similar solutions.

We identify these two key facts as the second phase of the trend with the established backup players (in yellow in the table below). It was initiated, as the first phase, by small vendors like CloudAlly, CloudHQ, Datto Backupify (at that time it was Backupify), Odaseva, OwnBackup, Spanning (now Kaseya) or SpinBackup.

We anticipate some partners agreements, OEM and even M&A activities for the coming quarters. With Kaseya acquisition of Spanning, this consolidation has already started. Some actors are completely absent so we expect a reaction.

For enterprises, the dilemma is always the same: pick a specialist often limited to one service i.e vertical or rely on a horizontal approach, more broad but potentially limited in functionalities. But a key criteria is the complexity so choices may vary.
