History (1988): Memorex Exits HDD Business

First plug compatible manufacturer stopping after 20 years

1988: Memorex exits disk drive business
First PCM disk drive company is the last and exits after 20 years

Why its important
Memorex was the first plug compatible (PCM) disk drive company. (see Memorex 630)

Memorex survived the shakeout of the 1970’s and was one of the few disk drive companies to ship a plug compatible 3380 product but its success in the market is unclear.

It tried but failed to transit into smaller form factor drives.

This is in contrast to both IBM and Imprimis who successfully transformed their companies from large mainframe oriented disk drives to the smaller form factor drives.

Memorex’s failure is also striking in light of IBM’s success with the 3380 family – according to some observers, the most profitable product line in the history of commerce and the most long lived disk drive product family.
