The 2018 IEEE TMRC Conference was put on by the IEEE Magnetics Society and had a focus this year on advancing HDD technology, particularly with heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) and microwave assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) as well as various types of magnetic random-access memory (MRAM). But there was also discussion of the use of helium and even vacuum inside of HDD drives and on how glass media could allow putting more disks in HDDs and thus higher capacity per drive.
