SIOS Opens R&D Facility at University of South Carolina to Advance AI

SIOS Technology Corp. announced the opening of a R&D facility at the M. Bert Storey Engineering and Innovation Center at the University of South Carolina’s College of Engineering and Computing in Columbia.

The facility will serve as the SIOS R&D center for product development and is strategically located at the university for the purpose of advancing collaborative research in AI and machine learning through collaboration with students and faculty.

With the new R&D facility located on-campus, students will have an opportunity to work with the latest AI technologies on projects addressing real-world problems alongside senior research engineers at SIOS.  In turn, the company has the opportunity to participate in rich academic community, tapping into academic programs, intern programs, Capstone projects, and helping to design meaningful research projects.

To support the fostering of research in AI, SIOS has also awarded the university a $475,000 grant for the use of its iQ software. The grant will enable the use of the technology in the university’s IT department and form the foundation for innovative student research focused on AI as applied to problems in IT operations.

SIOS’ CTO Sergey Razin, Ph.D., and a number of lead engineers at SIOS, are graduates of the University’s College of Engineering and Computing. Razin earned his B.S. in computer science in 1999 and is a current member of the University’s Computer Science Industry Advisory Board (IAB).

“My team and I have already been working closely with USC’s engineering and computer science departments by leading seminars and mentoring students in their undergraduate research.  With the opening of the new SIOS R&D facility, we’ll be able to more closely tap into the academics of the University,” said Razin.

Bert Storey Engineering and Innovation Center,” said Hossein Haj-Hariri, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. “SIOS researchers will be in the same building as our computer science and engineering, and integrated information technology departments, enabling joint research, enhancement of coursework content by real use cases, internships, and other innovative relationships, including the placement of our graduates in SIOS.“

“We are looking forward to the new research and teaching opportunities available to faculty and students with SIOS’s donation of leading AI technologies,” said Elizabeth Regan, professor and chair of the department of integrated IT, College of Engineering and Computing. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for collaboration, and we anticipate expanded research opportunities as funding agencies increasingly shift support to trans-disciplinary research on large-scale complex problems with societal impact.“

The M. Bert Storey Engineering and Innovation Center is attracting companies that are seeking to engage with the university in an open innovation model, collaborating with faculty, and employing students year-round to supplement their R&D operations.

Bill Kirkland, executive director of the University’s Office of Economic Engagement, said the new partnership is further proof that the university is a catalyst for attracting jobs to the Midlands.
