IBM Elastic Storage Server

Delivers combined flash and disk-based storage in hybrid models and Enterprise Slim Rack option.

IBM Elastic Storage Server delivers combined flash and disk-based storage in new Hybrid models and Enterprise Slim Rack option

IBM Elastic Storage Server Hybrid models provide the best of SSD and HDD storage capacities in a single offering:

  • One or two 2U drawers with up to 24 3.84TB or 15.3TB SSDs
  • Four 5U drawers with up to 234 4TB, 8TB, or 10TB HDDs
  • Optional 7965-S42 Enterprise Slim Rack

The models place spinning disks and flash storage in a single Elastic Storage Server (ESS) node, giving better storage density and a smaller footprint at a lower cost.

They combine the speed and low latency of flash storage with the density and affordability of spinning disk. One ESS can provide the storage for a diversity of workloads, including genomics, high-speed burst buffer, video streaming, machine learning, metadata services, and AI.

The new models, known as GH14 and GH24, provide up to 3.3PB of raw spinning disk combined with up to 720TB of flash storage.

In addition, the Enterprise Slim Rack is made available as on option on all ESS orders. This rack provides a 19-inch enclosure for data center. Its 600mm (23.6 inch) width enables it to be easily located on standard 24-inch floor tiles and provides thermal and cable management capabilities.

Key prerequisites for Elastic Storage Server:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 LE, or later
  • Spectrum Scale for Elastic Storage Server
  • IBM Select Support for xCAT V2

Planned availability date: June 22, 2018
