Starline: Backups Without Ballast with HYDRAstor Virtual Appliance by NEC
Scaling up to 16TB, backup speed of 10TB/hour
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 17, 2018 at 2:26 pmFor years HYDRAstor (HS) has been a fast and effective backup solutions in the three-digit petabyte range.
To enable SMBs to benefit from the compression and inline deduplication of the system, Starline Computer GmbH has added the cost-effective software variant to its range.
The HS VA software solution of the HS series from NEC Storage convinces with inexpensive, virtualized backups for SMBs as well as for ROBOs. It can be integrated on existing hardware infrastructure for virtualized data centers. With client-side deduplication and compression, the software achieves performance and storage efficiency on the home network. Its multi-site replication also helps to minimize data transfer in the WAN area. With this measure, HS VA achieves a backup speed of 10TB per hour.
With HS VA, the data carriers can even be assigned write protection (WORM) without additional license fees. This enables companies to implement their legal retention and provision obligations via data retention management and secure backups until the end of the retention period. A further protection of the data is provided by the 256-bit encryption (AES), which is performed at file system level. Data patrolling also ensures a periodic check for inconsistencies in the database and initiates automatic repair of the defective fragments. Veritas NetBackup users will appreciate the OST integration with Accelerator, optimized Copy and Auto Image Replication. Effective data shredding ensures secure deletion of data that is no longer required.
* Measured with HS VA running on a VMware ESXi host server with 2x Intel Xeon E5-2470 @2.30GHz (8 cores each), 96GB memory, 6x SATA HDD (7,200rpm 4TB) in RAID-6.
*Capacity values are calculated based on 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, 1TB = 1,000GB.
NEC’s hardware solutions are also available from Starline
Starline can also provide the very large systems if required. NEC has designed three classes for this, all of which can also be linked with the HS VA software variant: in addition to the features mentioned above, the HS appliances can also be used for erasure coding, which provides additional security. Like the software, the hardware is also flexible and scalable. Without any configuration effort, the administrator can screw an additional appliance into the rack, connect it and start it; additional backup capacities are already available in a highly available environment.
Enormous capacities can be built up from the HS8 product family. NEC always uses a g rid architecture, which in this case can comprise up to 165 nodes. When fully expanded, the systems can store up to 11.8PB of already compressed raw data (154PB effective). This all takes place at a deduped standard speed of 5.2PB per hour. All product variants can be mixed together in the flexibly scalable HYDRAstor world.
A 90-day test version of the HYDRAstor HS Virtual Appliance is available here.
