Advanced Endpoint Protection Feature For WebDrive File Transfer Client Software From South River Technologies

Response to adoption of cloud storage and EFSS services and subsequent growing dangers of ransomware

South River Technologies, Inc. (SRT) announced an update to the file transfer client, WebDrive, in response to customers’ adoption of cloud storage and EFSS services and the subsequent growing dangers of ransomware.

This version of WebDrive, a file access client that enables users to natively access cloud services from their desktop, is the first of its kind to protect users against ransomware. Cloud storage services can be vulnerable to ransomware, infecting files locally and then allowing them to be synced across all devices, leaving users without backups.

WebDrive’s Advanced Endpoint Protection feature allows users to see which applications are trying to access their local files, thus both preventing unauthorized application access, and decreasing the likelihood of ransomware infecting cloud storage. The feature allows users to choose which applications are allowed to modify files on the server, and blacklist those that are not.

This is particularly important, as cloud storage services, such as DropBox and OneDrive, do not have native support in their Virtual Drive Client for Advanced Enpoint Protection.

Ransomware is a serious and growing problem affecting corporate servers and cloud services,” says Michael Ryan, CEO, SRT. “While many safeguards may exist on the servers, the point of greatest vulnerability continues to be the endpoints. Users can inadvertently introduce malware to an entire network. WebDrive reduces these risks without any changes to the way that the user accesses the server.

This release also features improved performance for SharePoint Online and OneDrive for business connections, allowing customers faster, easier access to their remote files stored on these services.
