Microsoft and Compuverde in Licensing Partnership

Enabling access to Microsoft Server Message Block file transport technology for Compuverde software-defined storage solution

Microsoft Corp. and Compuverde AG entered into a license agreement to enable access to Microsoft’s Server Message Block (SMB) file transport technology for Compuverde’s software-defined storage (SDS) solution.

By incorporating SMB connectivity with the flexibility of Compuverde’s SDS, users are able to offload programs or files from multiple servers across multiple locations simultaneously.

We are excited to partner with an innovative company like Compuverde and provide its customers with our exceptional SMB file transport services for non-Windows solutions,” said Micky Minhas, head of Microsoft technology licensing. “As we continue to invest in licensing intellectual property associated with core technologies, this agreement showcases how Microsoft works with companies like Compuverde to enable solutions like SMB for SDS implementations.”

The great SDS migration shows no sign of slowing down, and organizations moving some or all of their data and applications will need a robust network file sharing protocol,” said Stefan Bernbo, CEO, Compuverde. “Partnering with Microsoft offers us the opportunity to deliver the shared access critical to successful cloud computing initiatives.”

This is the companies’ first partnership, and it builds on the trend of Microsoft’s SMB program enabling SDS solutions. The agreement includes access to future generations of SMB.

Microsoft’s commitment to licensing IP
The partnership is another example of the important role IP plays in ensuring a technology ecosystem. Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, it has entered into more than 1,200 licensing agreements.

Microsoft Technology Licensing LLC was formed in 2014 to acquire, manage and license company’s patent portfolio.
