Storage Made Easy Introduced M-Stream

Feature that parallelizes large downloads for object storage clouds such as Ceph, OpenStack Swift and Amazon S3

At the OpenStack Summit, in Sydney, Australia, Storage Made Easy (SME), trading name of Vehera LTD, presented M-Stream, an addition to their Enterprise File Fabric.

M-Stream, currently in beta, is a feature that parallelizes large downloads for Object Storage Clouds such as Ceph, OpenStack Swift and Amazon S3.

Doug Soltesz, director, product solutions, SME, demoed (video) M-Stream live on stage at the Sydney Summit. The demo illustrated how the File Fabric moves large files at high speed using multiple data streams. The configuration ran cross continent over the Internet from a Ceph cluster to IBM Cloud Object Storage (IBM COS). The results showed a 10x improvement over a single data stream for genomics and media data files.

M-Stream provides a simple and secure way for companies to maximize data pipe utilization, irrespective of distance, latency and OS involved. It is compatible with file systems and S3-compatible object storage endpoints.

Soltesz said: “Prospects and customers want to move to object storage. Their users are unwilling to tolerate long waits in rehydrating large files from object storage. Existing tools tend to be CLI driven and they are unwieldy for typical users. Storage Made Easy developed M-Stream with the enterprise use case in mind. It removes the complexity of working with object storage systems where large file streaming on demand is required.

Using parallel M-streams between S3 compatible storage and the company’s File Fabric data transfer for individual large files is no longer constrained by an overall transfer rate.
