IBM TS3100 and TS3200 Tape Libraries Accept LTO-8

For increased capacity

IBM TS3100 and TS3200 tape library models with LTO Ultrium 8 drives deliver increased capacity

IBM TS3100 Tape Library Model L2U (machine type 3573) and IBM TS3200 Tape Library Model L4U (machine type 3573) incorporate the new LTO-8, HH 6Gb SAS and HH 8Gb FC tape drives for MES or upgrades only, enhancing tape capacity over the previous generation of LTO-7 tape drives with a compressed data capacity of up to 30TB.

TS3200 Tape Library Model L4U

Mixed LTO Ultrium generations and attachment tape drive types are supported where drive space is available. Ultrium 8 SAS and FC tape drives are encryption capable.

TS3100 and TS3200 tape libraries incorporate IBM multipath architecture with logical libraries equal to the number of drives installed. Ultrium 8 tape drives for TS3100 and TS3200 tape libraries are only available as feature numbers.

LTO-8 tape drives support the LTO generation 8 media specification of double the compressed capacity of up to 30TB with 2.5 to 1 compression (up to 12TB native capacity) compared to previous LTO-7 compressed capacity of up to 15TB with 2.5 to 1 compression (up to 6TB native capacity) per tape cartridge.

IBM Ultrium 8 tape drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 7 data cartridges.

Note: Actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

TS3100 tape libraries can accommodate up to two LTO Ultrium HH tape drives or one LTO Ultrium FH tape drive, and comes standard with two removable cartridge magazines, one on the left side (12 data cartridge slots) and one on the right (12 data cartridge slots). The left magazine includes a single cartridge I/O station designed to enable continuous library operation while importing or exporting media.

A remote management unit and a barcode reader are standard in the library, enabling the library to run in sequential or random access mode. Optional features available include a rackmount kit, additional attachment cables, LTO library managed encryption, path failover, additional drives, interposers, and power cords.

TS3200 tape libraries can accommodate up to four LTO Ultrium HH tape drives or two LTO Ultrium FH tape drives. It comes standard with four removable cartridge magazines providing 48 data cartridge slots, including a three-slot I/O station. Optional features available include a rackmount kit, an additional power supply, additional removable cartridge magazines, LTO library managed encryption, path failover, additional drives, attachment cables, interposers, and power cords.

A remote management unit and a barcode reader are standard in the library, enabling it to run in sequential or random access mode.

Management software options

  • Spectrum Archive: TS3100 and TS3200 leverage Spectrum Archive for direct, intuitive, and graphical access to data stored in IBM tape drives and libraries by incorporating the IBM LTFS format standard. LTFS compatibility enables tape-stored data to be accessed as if it were on disk or flash storage. Spectrum Archive enables users of LTO-8 tape library systems to inventory cartridges and read, write, and search data on any cartridge, enabling writing of metadata and tagging of individual files for easy and fast access to files stored on cartridges.
  • Spectrum Protect: It enables users to create, manage, and optimize archives, and provides management of concurrent copies of content, plus active, inactive, and off-site content.

Key prerequisites
Appropriate levels of host software are required to attach and support TS3100 or TS3200 tape libraries with IBM LTO-8 tape drives to select IBM Power Systems, IBM System z, Linux, and Windows servers. See the Technical information section for details.
