Actiance Offers to Migrate from Veritas Enterprise Vault to Alcatraz

Following report by Osterman Research

Actiance, Inc., in communications compliance, archiving, and analytics, announced results of its study, Assessing the TCO for Veritas Enterprise Vault.

Published in partnership with Osterman Research, Inc., the report examines a range of cost factors – including those that are often overlooked – such as the cost per user of maintaining legacy, on-premise archives being higher than cloud alternatives.

In conjunction with the report, Actiance has also announced a migration program, which provides a fast and cost-effective path for customers to switch from Veritas Enterprise Vault to its Alcatraz, a context-aware cloud archive, without disrupting workflows or governance.

When comparing the cost per user of managing on-premise vs. cloud archiving solutions, companies often lack the full picture,” said Scott Whitney, SVP product management, Actiance. “Costs are often distributed across different IT buying centers and spread over time, such as storage and replication investments. However, this study shows that, with all factors considered, archiving in the cloud is much more cost-effective, even for companies with deeply entrenched on-premise infrastructure and data volumes.”

The study researched 73 organizations with an on-premise deployment of Enterprise Vault (EV), an average of 14,244 employees, and a median of 50TB of storage devoted to the EV environment.

Among its many findings, the study showed that:
Storage is the largest cost variable. Companies are storing an average of 35GB per email archive user, incurring an average total annual cost for ongoing storage capacity and maintenance of $447,00 at $8,950 per terabyte – even higher for firms greater than 10,000 seats. This high volume of data per user highlights the cost of the common practice of ‘keeping everything forever’ – including data from departed employees.

System replication is a major cost driver. Due to the critical nature of business communications being stored, most organizations maintain a fully replicated EV environment, and 54% of those surveyed said the cost of replication is equal to or exceeds that of the primary EV environment.

Cloud-based alternatives can reduce archiving costs. Cloud-based archives, which provide fully-managed services and allocate the costs of hardware, software, storage, replication, and infrastructure across multiple clients, can reduce TCO by 50% or more relative to the cost of procuring and maintaining an on-premise Enterprise Vault system.

The Actiance migration program for EV provides a fast and cost-effective path for users to move fromEV to Alcatraz, while meeting existing retention and compliance policies.

With this program, organizations using EV will have access to:

  • No-cost health check to plan your migration
  • No-cost ROI calculator to determine the efficiencies of migrating to the cloud
  • No-cost policy migration to migrate retention, legal hold, and supervision policies
  • Annual service credits to offset the cost of migration fees from EV
  • Complimentary training programs for end-users, legal, and supervisory staff

In addition to the cost savings of the cloud, this program allows companies to reap the benefits of Alcatraz’s fast search, high-performance ingest and exports, open APIs, and partner eco-system for rapid eDiscovery, next generation supervisory/surveillance workflows, and robust analytics.

Having a complete picture of the current and future costs of maintaining an on-premise archive is an important first step in building a solid, business case-justified migration strategy,” continued Whitney. “This program will enable them to make that transition at minimal cost, with zero disruption to compliance standards and workflows.”
