StorFly M.2 NVMe SSDs by Virtium

256GB and 512GB

Virtium LLC introduced its StorFly NVMe M.2 line of SSDs – designed to deliver power-saving, dependable storage to embedded and IoT designs.

The StorFly M.2 NVMe SSDs draw a 3W of power and feature industrial-temperature (I-Temp) support of -40Cº to 85Cº, with no performance degradation, allowing designs to incorporate higher performance, secure storage and data protection into harsh environments.

Based on the NVMe 1.2 and PCIe 3.0 specifications, these SSDs deliver high-speed data transfer in industrial-embedded and IioT applications and also can be configured to support x1, x2 and x4 lanes, depending on the host system requirements. This configurability can help reduce both power consumption and heat generation in industrial embedded and IIoT systems, while also ensuring a stable performance curve over workload and temperature variations.

Unlike enterprise and client NVMe applications, where data speeds and storage capacities take priority, the industrial-embedded and IIoT market segments place greater importance on maintaining data integrity and security,” said Scott Phillips, VP, marketing, Virtium. “The new StorFly M.2 NVMe SSDs combine the NVMe performance boost and lane configurability with Virtium’s leading technologies in low power, small form factor and I-Temp support, giving the drives a significant advantage over the competition.

The StorFly M.2 NVMe line further expands the company’s portfolio of secure solid-state storage solutions used by system and device manufacturers worldwide. The market segments served by those solutions include communications, energy, industrial automation, medical, transportation, and video/signage. It is one of the few SSD families available that supports mainstream 2-D, or planar, MLC flash memory, providing an alternative to limited-availability, highly allocated 3D TLC devices. That 2D MLC support helps ensure that manufacturers have a consistent and reliable supply source of proven MLC NAND flash for immediate use. The StorFly M.2 NVMe line does support 3D TLC flash, for designs that demand it, as well as firm’s own XE Class flash that employs high-endurance yet cost-effective industrial MLC technology. This versatility of the company’s M.2 NVMe’s NAND support enables the future-proofing of designs that can scale with the latest NAND flash technology.

Features of StorFly M.2 NVMe SSDs:

  • ‘Binary’ capacities, such as 256 and 512GB, requiring lower overprovisioning than with 240 and 480GB drives, thus maximizing system compatibility

  • vtGuard power-fail protection to guard against drive corruption in case of unexpected power loss

  • vtView support, for drive monitoring and alerts

  • vtSecure technology, enabling additional data security

The StorFly M.2 NVMe SSDs, in an 80mm form factor, will be available in 4Q17.
