Rumors swirl around Western Digital bid ahead of key Toshiba chip vote
Desperate to close a deal this week, Toshiba’s board of directors will meet again Wednesday to weigh three competing, multibillion-dollar bids for its prized flash memory chip business. Last week, the rumor was that San Jose-based HDD maker Western Digital Corp. was dropping out of negotiations at the eleventh hour, in return for a bigger stake in a joint venture agreement it has with Toshiba. Then, Apple Inc. reportedly threatened it would stop buying Toshiba chips if Western Digital won the bid (Cupertino-based Apple is said to be putting billions into a competing bid led by its main contract manufacturer, Foxconn).
