of storage within storage area network
Cisco Technology, Inc., San Jose, CA, has been assigned a patent (9,733,868) developed by Chandrasekaran, Varagur V., Fremont, CA, Sivakolundu, Ramesh, Saratoga, CA, and Fong, Dennis Kai-Fat, Milpitas, CA, for a “methods and apparatus for implementing exchange management for virtualization of storage within a storage area network.“
The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “Methods and apparatus for managing exchanges in a network device of a storage area network are disclosed. In a first ‘host-side’ exchange initiated by an initiator and between the initiator and the network device, one or more frames are received from an initiator and/or sent to the initiator. At least one of the frames pertains to access of a virtual storage location of a virtual storage unit representing one or more physical storage locations on one or more physical storage units of the storage area network. One or more ‘disk-side’ exchanges between the network device and one or more targets, (i.e., physical storage units) are initiated in response to the first exchange. In the disk-side exchanges, one or more frames are sent from the network device to one of the targets and/or received from the target. Exchange information for the host-side exchange and the associated disk-side exchanges are updated throughout the exchanges.“

Shared virtualized local storage
Cisco Technology, Inc., San Jose, CA, has been assigned a patent (9,733,845) developed by Smith, James B., San Jose, CA, and Baddela, Sesidhar, Cupertino, CA, for a “shared virtualized local storage.“
The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “An embedded processing unit, (eCPU) processes an input/output, (I/O) request from a host using a virtual storage controller. The eCPU associates a virtual network interface with a host. The virtual storage controller uses a first transport protocol. The eCPU receives an I/O request directed at a storage device from the virtual storage controller. The eCPU determines a second transport protocol used by the storage device, and converts the I/O request from a format according to the first transport protocol to a format according to the second transport protocol. The eCPU transmits the I/O request to the storage device using the second transport protocol.“
