Swarm64, Emerging Player From Germany

Embedded storage and computing to boost database performance

Founded in 2012, the company started in Berlin, Germany in 2012, with an office in Oslo, Norway by a team of database software developers and parallel processor experts, Eivind Liland, Alfonso Martinez, and Thomas Richter.

Swarm64 AS Zweigstelle is currently led by CEO Karsten Rönner.

Richter is COO and Liland left the company after various roles as founding CEO and then CTO until December 2016.

The firm has raised a total of $8.68 million, including $7.96 million series A on September 2015.

Among board members, there is Birger Stern, advisor since a few months, and former CEO of Parallels.

Swarm64 develops a mix of hardware and software presented as a PCIe card named Scalable Database Accelerator. This component utilizes the latest generation of FPGAs, Intel Arria 10 FPGAs coming from Altera acquisition, to increase data throughput, to reduce CPU load and to deliver huge performance improvements for PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and MySQL.

The product named Swarm64SDA sits in the data path as a plug-in and is integrated into existing DB as a Foreign Data Wrapper.

It enables real-time analytics or high number of I/O operations for demanding applications such big-scale OLAP environments without any ETL need.

According to the vendor, users can expect gains in multiple areas:

  • Up to 10.6x higher data capture and ingestion speed
  • Up to 9.2x higher analytics performance
  • Up to 13.2x reduction in storage size and I/O bandwidth

The solution is illustrated on the Intel Altera page.
