AIC Adding Seagate Flash Acceleration to Servers

For distributed file systems

AIC, Inc. announced it will use Seagate Nytro XF1440 NVMe SSDs in its AIC SB122A-PH server for distributed file systems.

The resulting NVMe offering – which combines the speed and low cost/GB of Seagate flash technology with AIC’s scale-out servers – provides an affordable option for organizations seeking to store and quickly access large amounts of data on demand.

The server solution will use the Nytro XF1440 NVMe SSDs in a Ceph software-defined storage application. The combination of the power-efficient NVMe SSD with the Ceph reference design will improve overall efficiency and storage density, making the SB122A-PH a fit for organizations looking to minimize latency while improving computing power in a small, energy-efficient footprint.

Workloads requiring fast storage and low latency include data-intensive broadcast applications such as media and internet protocol television (IPTV) distribution, where fast access to large data sets is crucial – particularly with the rise of video captured at 4K resolution and multimedia that incorporate immersive surround-sound capabilities.

For content providers, this poses a challenge – the higher the media resolution gets, the more the container file size expands,” said CT Sun, AIC chief architect. “NVMe technology and innovative distributed file systems like CephFS can help overcome today’s challenges and provide a good step for future growth.

IDC recently reported that the amount of data we create and consume is expected to increase ten-fold over the next several years, driven mainly by the continued shift toward high- and ultra-definition streaming content, as well as increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence and the expanding IoTs,” said Brett Pemble, Seagate GM and VP of SSD products. “Seagate will continue to innovate and work with partners such as AIC to address this massive deluge of data. In this case, the combination of AIC server technology and Seagate XF1440 NVMe SSDs is a powerful enabler of these data trends and is able to handle today’s intense multimedia production and consumption workloads.

Using the AIC SB122A-PH in conjunction with Nytro XF1440 NVMe SSDs
provides  range of benefits, including:

  • Higher performance density: Higher IO/s and MB/s per rack unit (RU)
  • Lower power / performance: Lower power than HDDs or SATA SSDs of equivalent performance
  • Less mean time between failures: Fewer HDDs or SATA SSDs for the same performance
  • Reduced Ceph node and object storage device recovery time: Best capacity and performance balance per rack unit
  • Lower TCO: Fewer components plus minimal use of space and power

Additionally, the solution directly connects SSDs and avoids adding latency by eliminating PCIe switching.
