Commvault Deployed at Small-Town Hospital

Commvault Systems, Inc. announced that Montgomery County Memorial Hospital (MCMH) in Red Oak, IA, has deployed the Commvault Data Platform to simplify data management and drive continued investment in progressive healthcare services.

With Commvault, MCMH has streamlined back-end processes, enabling the rural community hospital to take on a broader role as a center for population health.

Classified as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH), MCMH receives federal funding to ensure the continual delivery of emergency services as the next closest hospital is more than 35 miles away. By replacing its legacy IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) platform  (now IBM Spectrum Object) with Commvault, the hospital improved data protection performance and reliability. As the weak link in its back-end operations, TSM required inordinate administration as a full-time resource and was tasked with troubleshooting problems with nightly backups.

By switching to Commvault, MCMH realized gains in data protection performance while lowering backup and recovery costs, risks and administrative overhead. Managing backup and recovery operations takes about 15 minutes each day, which frees a full-time resource to focus on more strategic initiatives. Moreover, unified virtual protection of the hospital’s VMware and Hyper-V environments enables safeguarding and proper preservation of 70TB of vital clinical applications, patient medical records and healthcare reimbursement data.

As a result, MCMH has begun offering healthcare services, enticing specialists and surgeons to travel from Omaha, Nebraska, and other big cities to perform complex procedures and surgeries at MCMH.

The organization also participates in a regional health information exchange that provides physicians with secure, private access to medical information from anywhere in the country. Moreover, MCMH is making major progress in rolling out a new population health service, called Life Science Technology, which provides patients with devices for monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and other variables that impact health.
