Toshiba 3.5-Inch MN Series HDDs at 4TB, 6TB and 8TB

6Gb SATA, 7,200rpm, 1,000,000-hour MTTF

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) announced its first MN Series HDDs, bridging the value gap between top-end enterprise capacity HDDs and entry-level desktop HDDs, while still delivering 7,200rpm rotational latency performance.

The MN series delivers up to 8TB capacity in a 3.5-inch form factor for a range of file and object storage applications. With a 6Gb (2) SATA interface, 7,200 rotational speed, 1,000,000 hour MTTF (3) rating, and a rated annual workload of 180TB (4) transferred, this HDD series delivers the performance and reliability needed for file and object storage workloads that typically utilize sequential data transfer operations. The drives are designed for 24/7 power-on operation and feature rotational vibration compensation technology to help provide consistent performance in tower and low-density style multi-drive enclosures, such as small NAS platforms.

Many customers with predominantly file-oriented and fixed-content sequential write and read workloads are looking for cost-effective capacity for moderate workload storage applications,” said Scott Wright, director, HDD marketing, Toshiba America Electronic Components. ” With our new MN Series HDD models we are providing a workload range within the high workload data center work-horse enterprise capacity HDDs and relatively low workloads associated with client HDD models.

The initial MN Series HDD models are available in 8, 6 and 4TB capacities, each leveraging company’s proven enterprise capacity category HDD design legacy to deliver cost-effective storage for fixed-content workload-limited use cases. Targeted applications include mid-level, entry-level and SOHO NAS storage enclosures, remote-office backup and archival storage, and home multimedia data archive and fixed-content object storage.

(1) Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a MB as 1,000,000 bytes, a gigabyte) as 1,000,000,000 bytes and a terabyte as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer OS, however, reports storage capacity using powers of (2) for the definition of 1TB = 240 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and OS, such as Microsoft OS and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.
(2) Read and write speed may vary depending on the host device, read and write conditions, and file size.
(3) MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) is not a guarantee or estimate of product life; it is a statistical value related to mean failure rates for a large number of products which may not accurately reflect actual operation. Actual operating life of the product may be different from the MTTF.
(4) Workload is a measure of the data throughput of the year, and it is defined as the amount of data written, read or verified by commands from host system.
