Here are the preliminary results of the 3CQ16 WW HDD market for Trendfocus, Inc., as published on October 4, 2016:
HDD Shipments of 112-114+ Million Units
on Higher PC and Game Console HDD Demand
3.5-inch desktop/CE HDDs
Total desktop/CE HDDs (including 3.5-inch external HDDs) increased around 10% to 12% sequentially to approximately 36 million to 36.5 million in 3CQ16. Desktop PC sales improved modestly due to back-to-school sales, and a rise in surveillance and external HDDs contributed to the growth.
2.5-inch mobile/CE HDDs
Higher mobile HDD sales driven by improved notebook PC demand and strong seasonal game console HDD shipments fueled 2.5-inch mobile/CE HDDs sales in 3CQ16. Unit shipments rose to approximately 59-61 million for the quarter, up 19% and 23% sequentially.
3.5-inch/2.5-inch enterprise HDDs
Traditional enterprise HDDs improved slightly from the prior quarter, due to stability in server demand. Nearline HDDs should post record shipments for th quarter with continued robust cloud/hyperscale demand that has driven growth throughout 2016. The combination of the two categories resulted in low single-digit percentage growth, ranging from 16.6 million to 17 million HDDs in 3CQ16.
