Benchmarks of Tintri VMstore T5060 All-Flash Array – Evaluator Group and IOmark
Supports 3,000 VDI instances at 60:1 reduction rates when supporting fully provisioned virtual desktops and 480 virtual server instances.
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on September 21, 2016 at 2:40 pmIOmark and Evaluator Group, Inc. announce benchmark results for Tintri VMstore forIOmark-VM and IOmark-VDI.
The Tintri T5060 was verified to support 3,000 VDI instances at data reduction rates of 60:1 when supporting fully provisioned virtual desktops and 480 virtual server instances.
The IOmark-VM benchmark certifies storage systems for virtual server workloads, while the IOmark-VDI benchmark certifies virtual desktop workloads. The measurement criterion for IOmark is storage performance measured by response time, with all storage workloads running on the tested system. IOmark measures and reports both application specific performance and the price per VM or VDI instance.

“The storage efficiency of Tintri’s data reduction surpassed any storage system tested to date for VDI workloads,” said Russ Fellows, senior partner, Evaluator Group. “The IOmark results achieved by the T5060, establish Tintri’s leading price/performance for persistent VDI users, along with one of the leading performance and price/performance results for virtual server workloads, making the Tintri T5060 one of the best storage values for virtualized workloads.”
The T5060 completed IOmark-VDI achieving 3,000 instances at a price of $75.00/desktop and IOmark-VM achieving 480 instances at a price of $468.75/virtual server.

Some of key features noted during testing include:
- It was able to boot 3,000 fully provisioned virtual desktops in 1,004s, a rate of 3 desktops per second
- It eliminated storage provisioning for VMs from an average of 5 minutes per VMs to 0 (provisioning times based upon Evaluator Group’s experience)
- It enabled monitoring performance and capacity on a per VM basis, both from within the Tintri web interface and through their VMware plug-in unlike competing storage solutions which do not provide these details
Tintri stores virtualized workloads-offering an integrated VM-Aware Storage (VAS) system for virtualized enterprises and cloud. Its VM scale-out architecture can balance projects and workloads across high-performance all-flash and hybrid-flash storage systems. The IOmark benchmark results are audited to ensure uniform testing and reporting of results, enabling IT users to compare products using metrics that matter: price, capacity and application performance.
“The Evaluator Group results help prove the value of VM-aware storage built specifically for virtualized environments and cloud. Simply put, Tintri can offer efficiencies in how VMs are stored and managed that are not possible with conventional storage,” said Kieran Harty, co-founder and CTO, Tintri. “The Evaluator Group has put many of our storage kin through these same paces, and so to raise the bar on data reduction rates, eliminate provisioning and deliver differentiated results exemplifies why partners and customers are so fanatical about Tintri.”
The application mix for IOmark-VM includes databases, webservers and Exchange mail servers plus hypervisor operations consisting of a VM clone, deploy, boot, software upgrade, and storage migration between storage volumes.
The application mix for IOmark-VDI consists of standard windows desktop applications, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer, Windows Media player and other applications.
IOmark-VM benchmark requires following to achieve passing results:
- Total test time is 1 hour, with a measured interval of 30 minutes
- 70% of response times for I/Os must not exceed 20ms
- A minimum number of storage vMotion and VM clone operations must also be completed during a 1 hour test
IOmark-VDI benchmark requires following to achieve passing results:
- Total test time is one hour, with a measured interval of 30 minutes
- 70% of response times for I/O’s must not exceed 30ms
Evaluator Group is the developer of IOmark, which is available without charge to Evaluator Group IT end user premium subscribers.
