IBM Spectrum Control V5.2.10 and Virtual Storage Center V5.2.10

Deliver enhancements for capacity metrics and storage.

IBM Spectrum Control V5.2.10 and IBM Virtual Storage Center V5.2.10 deliver enhancements for capacity metrics and storage efficiency.

IBM Spectrum Control
This new version of IBM Spectrum Control will enable to get a better understanding about capacity growth for storage systems, pools, volumes fileset, and file systems by including additional new charts and capacity metrics.

A new data source is being introduced in Spectrum Control V5.2.10 by enabling one Spectrum Control server to be added as a data source to another Spectrum Control server, creating a single point of control as data from the subordinate server is rolled up to the master server.

Best practice guidelines for IBM SAN Volume Controller and Storwize storage systems are shown in a new panel, and display the measured performance against the best practice performance guidelines provided by SAN Volume Controller and Storwize support.

In addition to the new functions, this version replaces the per-terabyte licenses with a new method of licensing which better aligns the value of the management to the cost of the technology that is being managed.

This new license model is called Storage Capacity Unit (SCU) and applies to:

  • Spectrum Control Standard Edition
  • Spectrum Control Advanced Edition

There is no change in the way the following products are licensed:

  • Spectrum Control Standard Select Edition
  • Spectrum Control Advanced Select Edition

IBM Virtual Storage Center
IBM Spectrum Control Version V5.2.10 is now included with IBM Virtual Storage Center, IBM Virtual Storage Center for Storwize, and IBM Virtual Storage Center Entry Edition.

The license of IBM Virtual Storage Center has also changed to the new SCU license model.

There is no change in the way the following products are licensed:

  • Virtual Storage Center Entry
  • Virtual Storage Center for Storwize Family

Storage Capacity Unit (SCU)
Beginning with Version 5.2.10, the former terabyte licenses will be replaced with SCU licenses. The base is still the amount of capacity that is being managed or virtualized, in case of Virtual Storage Center, but now the storage technology is taken into consideration so that management and virtualization of large amounts of inexpensive storage will also cost less.

Key prerequisites
IBM Virtual Storage Center requires IBM SAN Volume Controller nodes or IBM Storwize storage systems.

Planned availability date: May 26, 2016, for electronic availability. There is no physical media.
