Citrix Assigned Three Patents

Creation and delivery of encrypted virtual disks, storage optimization selection within a virtualization environment, establishing cloud bridge between virtual storage resources

Creation and delivery of encrypted virtual disks
Citrix Systems, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, FL,
has been assigned a patent (9,311,509) developed by Casper, Ryan Matthew, Kennett, MO, Desai, Nitin, Coral Springs, FL, Chinta, Madhav, and Deshpande, Jitendra, Pompano Beach, FL, for a “creation and delivery of encrypted virtual disks.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”The present application is directed to methods and systems for receiving a request for a virtual disk and creating a virtual disk that includes the virtual disk attributes identified in the request or determined by an organization’s security policies. The created virtual disk can then be encrypted and in some aspects, an encryption key for the encrypted virtual disk can be stored in an encryption key database. Upon creating and encrypting the virtual disk, the virtual disk can be transmitted to a client. The client, upon receiving the encrypted virtual disk, can mount the virtual disk into the client system. The encrypted virtual disk may be stored as a file within an unencrypted virtual disk, and the unencrypted virtual disk backed up to a local or remote storage location.

The patent application was filed on May 6, 2011 (13/102,793).

Storage optimization selection within virtualization environment
Citrix Systems, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, FL, has been assigned a patent (9,286,087) developed by Sharp, Richard, and Scott, David, Cambridge, Great Britain, for a “storage optimization selection within a virtualization environment .

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: Storage optimization selection for virtual disks of a virtualization environment, where the storage optimization can be selected based in part on the disk type of a virtual disk included in a virtual machine. The disk type of the virtual disk can be discovered by the virtualization environment which queries a database within the virtualization environment for metadata associated with the virtual disk. The metadata can be created when a virtual desktop infrastructure creates the virtual disk, and a virtual machine template that includes the at least one virtual disk. The virtual disk can be modified to either include or be associated with the metadata that describes a disk type of the virtual disk. Upon executing the virtual machine that includes the modified virtual disk, a storage subsystem of the virtualization environment can obtain the metadata of the virtual disk to discover the disk type of the virtual disk.

The patent application was filed on March 13, 2013 (13/799,776).

Establishing cloud bridge between virtual storage resources
Citrix Systems, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, FL, has been assigned a patent (9,210,100) developed by Van Der Linden, Rob, Halls, David, Waterhouse, Simon, Cambridge, Great Britain, and Benoit, Peter, Kirkland, WA, for a “systems and methods for establishing a cloud bridge between virtual storage resources .

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: Methods and systems for establishing a cloud bridge between two virtual storage resources and for transmitting data from one first virtual storage resource to the other virtual storage resource. The system can include a first virtual storage resource or cloud, and a storage delivery management service that executes on a computer and within the first virtual storage resource. The storage delivery management service can receive user credentials of a user that identify a storage adapter. Upon receiving the user credentials, the storage delivery management service can invoke the storage adapter which executes an interface that identifies a second virtual storage resource and includes an interface translation file. The storage delivery management service accesses the second virtual storage resource and establishes a cloud bridge with the second virtual storage resource using information obtained from the second virtual storage resource and information translated by the storage adapter using the interface translation file.

The patent application was filed on October 21, 2013 (14/059,039).
