Build Group Constructs Cloud-Based DR Strategy With Druva

Replacing traditional on-premise data protection strategy

Druva, Inc. announced that Build Group, Inc. has deployed Druva Phoenix to protect its critical data across multiple locations.

The construction contractor firm, based in San Francisco, CA and active in Southern California, replaced its existing on-premise server backup solution with cloud-based Phoenix, resulting in faster backup performance as well as easier management and recovery processes for the company.

With more than 400 staff members spread across multiple offices, Build Group has an overall IT strategy that is based on moving services and data into the cloud where possible. However, construction projects generate huge volumes of data from computer-aided design files and SQL databases to more standard office productivity files and email. A traditional backup and DR system had been implemented that protected all the data generated in each location.

As part of its overall cloud strategy, Build Group’s IT team started looking for new services that could replace this traditional approach as well as making backup easier to manage. Their search led them to Phoenix, which requires no hardware and is 100% in the cloud.

We see the cloud as the way of the future, so we’re always looking to adopt cloud services and reduce hardware on-site. Druva stood out for its approach to user experience as well as support for cloud services – the portal was really easy to use, and it provides automated management of data from warm stand-by data to long-term storage for audit. We have to store data for a decade, so this new approach represents significant cost savings for us compared to managing this data internally,” said Adam Kailian, IT systems administrator, Build Group.

Druva Phoenix is based on the AWS cloud and integrates with AWS’ virtual private cloud network and Glacier cloud storage service. As new files are created or edited, the data is automatically sent to the cloud. Using deduplication, the overall volume of storage required is reduced compared to hosting data internally across multiple offices.

Since we have implemented Phoenix, we have been able to reduce the overall amount of data that was sent over the network for backup. Users have complimented us on improving network performance. However, the best element here is that we have a simpler management process in place for protecting all our critical data,” said Kailian.

Phoenix is an all-in-one solution to bring together backup, archival and DR and harness the ease of use and scalability of the public cloud. Data can be cached locally for fast backup and recovery when required, helping companies meet their recovery time and RPO, and automatically be moved to cold storage after a specified period of time for increased cost savings.
