Cisco MDS 9718 Multilayer Director for IBM Storage Networking

With 768 line rate 16Gb FC ports

Cisco MDS 9718 Multilayer Director for IBM Storage Networking delivers scalability and pay-as-you-grow flexibility to scale and consolidate enterprise clouds

Cisco MDS 9718,IBM

The Cisco MDS 9718 Multilayer Director for IBM Storage Networking (9710-E16) is the industry’s highest port-density SAN Director with 768 line rate 16Gb FC ports. It is designed for deployment in midsize to large enterprises. It will enable SAN consolidation and collapsed core for large enterprise customers, reducing the number of managed switches and the number of front panel ports burnt on ISLs, offering room for future growth.

It addresses the requirements of large virtualized data center storage requirements. As a director-class SAN switch, the MDS 9718 uses the same OS and management interface as other Cisco data center switches. It brings intelligent capabilities to a high-performance, protocol-independent switch fabric, to gain availability, security, and scalability, with simplified management and the capability to integrate new technologies. It lets transparently deploy unified fabrics with FC and FCoE connectivity for low TCO.

The Cisco MDS 9700 24-port 40-Gb FCoE Switching Module (feature number 3640) is now available on the Cisco MDS 9710 Multilayer Director for IBM System Storage and the Cisco MDS 9706 Multilayer Director for IBM System Storage. The 16Gb/s ELW SFPs are now also available for all the Cisco MDS 16 Gb/s platforms that have been previously announced.

The module provides Cisco Unified Fabric connectivity to the SAN core. It empowers midsize and large enterprises that are rapidly deploying cloud-scale applications with Inter-Switch Link (ISL) consolidation by four to one over traditional 10Gb FCoE and three to one over 16Gb FC, delivering investment protection for their SANs. The data center fabric is already using 40 Gb/s connectivity in the core for more efficient convergence, higher performance, and lower TCO. You can extend the benefits of FCoE beyond the access layer to the data center core with a full line-rate FCoE module for the Cisco MDS 9700 Series Multilayer Directors.

You can save money, simplify management, reduce cabling, power, and cooling requirements, and improve flexibility by deploying FCoE, while protecting your FC SAN investment with the MDS 9700 24-port 40-Gbps FCoE Switching Module. FCoE delivers an evolutionary approach to I/O consolidation by preserving all FC constructs. It maintains the latency, security, and traffic management attributes of FC, as well as investment in FC tools, training, and SANs. FCoE also extends FC SAN connectivity. Now 100% of your network servers can be attached to the SAN.

Key prerequisites
Cisco MDS 9718 Multilayer Director for IBM Storage Networking supports FC connectivity. The 9710-E16 model supports all features and functions listed, and requires Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS software release 7.3.0.D1.1, or later.

Planned availability date: May 27, 2016
