DataON Storage: CiB-9112 V12 Cluster-in-a-Box Hyper-Converged Appliance

Microsoft certified, starting at $20,000, 2U, up to 70TB of raw tiered storage capacity

DataON Storage announced an expansion in its hyper-converged appliance product line with the Microsoft Corp.‘s certification of the CiB-9112 V12.

This Cluster-in-a-Box (CiB) turnkey appliance is a two-node clustered system with compute, tiered flash storage, networking and Windows Server Hyper-V virtualization designed for ROBOs and micro data centers.

Market forces have spoken and the hyper-converged architecture is here to stay, as it solves an unmet challenge for our ROBO customers,” says Trenton R. Baker, VP, business development, DataON. “The beauty of a DataON Cluster-in-a-Box appliance stems from its heritage as the inaugural certified platform for Storage Spaces and thus common sense dictates that as one builds a Microsoft-Defined Datacenter one should standardized with Microsoft certified solutions.

The CiB is purpose-built for Storage Spaces functionality in Windows Server 2012 R2 by optimizing both the capacity and performance of shared storage in the virtual datacenter. The small business and branch office markets have been left behind in favor of VM-centric all-flash array solutions that fail to address flexibility and TCO. With the addition of this latest certification, the firm is adding a self-contained hyper-converged ROBO appliance to meet the needs of Microsoft customers for a simple and easy to deploy solution-yet capable of running autonomously and controlled centrally.

The new DataON CiB-9112 is a vital building block for our customers to achieve a software-defined Microsoft Infrastructure, with its unification of compute, virtualization and storage. Delivering a 100% Microsoft Certified solution from DataON allows us to implement an efficient and easy to manage solution, whereas previously it would be unheard of for a branch office or small business environment to be equipped with an auto-tiering flash or highly available appliance because of the cost,” states Aidan Finn, MVP (cloud and datacenter management/Hyper-V), technical sales lead, MicroWarehouse Ltd.

The CiB-9112 V12 reduces the amount of storage needed by a VM with up to 20:1 deduplication-placing more Hyper-V instances on the storage backend-while tuning the hot tier for performance and moving less active data to the high capacity cold tier. With up to 70TB of raw tiered storage capacity, 64 physical compute cores and 1TB of memory in a compact 2U footprint, company’s CiB appliance enables IT organizations to simplify operations, cut costs and plan for remote site growth as a Microsoft certified micro data center. SMB and ROBO can achieve more with their existing storage budgets by saving up to 75% CapEx over non-certified Microsoft Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) purveyors offerings.

This appliance solution will help extend enterprise value to regional and branch office segments with less IT staff” says Siddhartha Roy, group program manager, Windows server HA and storage, Microsoft. “Windows Server 2012 R2 Storage Spaces deployed in a hyper-converged integrated appliance helps further lower acquisition and operating costs

At a list price of $20,000, an entry-level CiB-9112 V12 brings 128GB memory and 32 virtual cores in a dual-node appliance with 800GB hot tier and 48TB cold tiered storage-tuned and certified for Microsoft’s Storage Spaces. Many proposed hyper-converged infrastructure appliances offer designs with half the performance and up to 3x the initial cost. The CiB-9112 V12 is an affordable hyper-converged appliance and includes HA, data protection, deduplication, shared data tiering, and virtual rebuild capabilities at no additional cost.
