Seagate Brings HPC Performance and Data Management With ClusterStor G200 Storage System
Supporting IBM Spectrum Scale file system (formerly GPFS)
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on November 26, 2015 at 2:56 pmSeagate Technology plc introduced the ClusterStor G200 Spectrum Scale, HPC – class storage solution to help data-driven enterprises manage massive storage growth.
The G200 integrates with 3.5-inch ClusterStor HPC drive specifically designed for the HPC market.
The explosion of data is affecting all facets of how organizations do business – and straining IT operations. As the first Seagate ClusterStor system supporting the IBM Spectrum Scale file system (formerly known as General Parallel File System – GPFS), the G200 features a range of enterprise features and tools for helping manage this data growth. It also enables high-performance data access critical to industries ranging from life sciences, to automotive and aerospace design, to financial services among a wide range of technical computing applications.
“HPC storage is no longer limited to just academia or to defense and intelligence applications, as a growing number of industries are grappling with how to manage massive amounts of data previously found in only those traditional HPC areas. The needs of these data-driven enterprises are different, however. They need a way to easily manage workflows and data access without interruption,” said Ken Claffey, VP and GM, HPC systems business, Seagate. “Seagate’s G200 builds on the proven ClusterStor architecture to provide purpose-built solutions specifically engineered for applications where efficient and scalable workflows are critical for accelerating their time to results.“
Leveraging the ClusterStor engineered storage architecture, the G200, been custom-designed from the ground up for HPC, with everything from disk drives to the enclosures and software tuned for HPC performance and scalability. The G200 storage system unit is delivered with 84 slots for 3.5-inch HDD and SSD in a 5U enclosure with embedded storage controllers. The G200 and the L300 – Lustre-based system – are enterprise HPC systems to deploy company’s ClusterStor HPC drive. The 3.5-inch drive supports up to 4TB and features a sequential data rate of 300MB/s, and 35% fast random performance than any other 3.5-inch drive, making it for the broadest range of data ingest and access needs of HPC applications.
The system comes pre-configured, tested and ready to deploy, so organizations can quickly have it up and running in hours to maximize productivity. In addition, users benefit from ClusterStor’s reduced footprint, compared to traditional external file-serving nodes, which helps lower power, cooling and administrative costs without compromising performance. And ClusterStor for IBM Spectrum Scale continues to utilize Grid RAID, firm’s declustered RAID feature addition that delivers rebuild times up to 400% faster than legacy RAID systems.
Atos SE, through its Extreme Computing Business Unit, has worked in close partnership with Seagate to harness the performance and reliability of the G200 ClusterStor solution.
“We’re currently stressing Seagate’s new GPFS-based appliance at the Atos factory in Angers, France, and are pleased by what we’re seeing,” said Pascal Barbolosi, VP and GM, extreme computing, Atos. With a long track record of mission-critical GPFS-based deployments and support, Atos Extreme Computing BU is excited to extend its support to Seagate’s new range of GPFS-based ClusterStor appliances.”
“We believe Seagate’s G200 appliance will help our HPC customers solve their most data intensive workloads and data hierarchy issues in a comprehensive, yet simpler way,” said Eric Eppe, director, storage and data management product line, extreme computing, Atos.
“Dell is committed to providing the right system optimization capabilities to the HPC community, and Seagate’s ClusterStor G200 for IBM Spectrum Scale is a valuable complement to our HPC portfolio,” said Onur Celebioglu, director, HPC solutions engineering, Dell, Inc. “Building on our longstanding partnership with Seagate, G200 will help us meet the specific needs of an important and growing part of the HPC market, where data-intensive workloads require the right solution and support.“
The ClusterStor family is built on company’s enterprise storage architecture, Lustre, and IBM Spectrum Scale. Combining performance with ultra-efficient scalability, the ClusterStor family includes ClusterStor L300, ClusterStor A200, ClusterStor G200, ClusterStor 9000, ClusterStor 1500, and the ClusterStor Secure Data Appliance.
ClusterStor G200 for Spectrum Scale will be available in calendar Q1 2016.
