NEC HYDRAstor HS8-5000: Purpose-Built Backup Appliance

NEC Corporation of America (NEC) announced the fifth generation of its HYDRAstor storage platform.

The HYDRAstor HS8-5000 solution increases effective capacity 54% more than the previous version and supports larger disk drives than the previous model, while maintaining fast data rebuild time through HYDRAstor Erasure Coding data resiliency technology.

HS8-5000 can ingest backup data up to >5PB/hr which is 27X higher than the next closest competitor in the purpose-built backup appliance market. This release includes a single node model (HS3-510), which mainly covers small-medium market and remote sites for DR. This release re-enforces HYDRAstor’s reputation for performance with deduped transfer to reduce bandwidth requirements for general applications and data transfer to help facilitate remote backups, and automate and speed up full backups.

HYDRAstor HS8-5000 delivers:

• Erasure coding data protection technology scales to support bigger drives easier than RAID technology, a key technology advantage over competitive offerings

• Defined software suite Advanced Data Services (ADS) for integration with general applications

• Up to >5PB/hr performance and up to >11PB raw capacity

• Global Name Space (GNS), global access to the same data through multiple front-end nodes (hybrid node), which delivers more flexibility and performance to geographically dispersed users
