Unveiled at OpenStack Summit Tokyo, the 3.0 SwiftStack software released expands on company’s commitment to simplicity, a pay-as-you-grow model and extreme scalability. It offers innovations such as Amazon S3 API emulation to expand access to any application and consolidate unstructured data, whether file system or object storage, in private clouds built on company’s storage. Enterprises struggling to manage application growth can dramatically simplify their storage with the freedom, flexibility and cost-effectiveness of company’s object storage, which offers capacity that scales from small clusters to EBs of data.

“Traditionally a slow growth segment, object storage has but recently started to take off in terms of customer adoption. Why? Because businesses today are demanding a software centric approach that offers the cost-effective scalability of the cloud and avoids vendor and hardware lock-in,” said Don Jaworski, CEO, SwiftStack. “With more than 50 customers are adopting SwiftStack over the last year, we are the fastest growing object storage platform in the industry because we offer the one-of-a-kind combination of easy- to- consume storage with secure cloud management and pay-as-you-go licensing.”
“Organizations can benefit from the rich ecosystem of ISVs and tools by deploying widely used APIs implemented by storage vendors,” said Raj Bala, research director, cloud storage, Gartner. (*)
Strong enough for cloud, made for enterprise
SwiftStack object storage is designed to give enterprises a simple solution for deploying and managing a secure, private storage cloud and avoid hardware lock-in while gaining freedom of choice in management, access and protection and control of clusters across data centers.

Software-based storage benefits of Object Storage 3.0 include:
-
Unified file and object-based storage in a single solution – Offers users multiple ways to access stored data through APIs such as S3, OpenStack Swift and REST; file system (CIFS and NFS) gateway; and file sync and share capabilities.
-
Enhanced SwiftStack controller – New time-saving simplicity features for enterprise, including Active Secondary Controller, support for Active Directory groups and multiple endpoints, and easier scaling with auto ingest and hardware profiles configured by resellers.
-
Flexible data protection policies including erasure codes and replication – Provides customers with the balance of capacity, backup and continuity that fits business requirements as storage and applications grow.
“As their data grows to petabytes upon petabytes, businesses today need storage that is simple to deploy and manage and much more distributed than traditional approaches in the datacenter,” said Joe Arnold, president and chief product officer, SwiftStack. “For us, the obvious answer is open access and simplicity. Built in part by the largest open-source community in the world and as easy to use as Amazon with our new S3 compatibility, our latest release of SwiftStack has proved to be as strong as the cloud but unique in its enterprise-focused design.“

This release of SwiftStack Object Storage his available worldwide since Tuesday, Oct. 27 from the company and its network of resellers, service provider and integration partners.
Joe Disher, director, product marketing, backup and recovery, Veritas Technologies LLC said: “Veritas NetBackup 7.7. was enhanced with powerful new capabilities that greatly expand the effectiveness of backup and recovery operations that utilize cloud storage services, increasing performance by up to thirty times. The new cloud connector introduced in NetBackup 7.7 designed on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) expands choice for customer environments with hybrid cloud and object storage on-premises and will soon be certified with SwiftStack 3.0.”
Ron Bianchini, CEO and president, Avere Systems, Inc. said: “Avere has certified a joint solution with SwiftStack using the S3 API. This collaboration brings existing and new joint customers the performance capabilities required to make use of the vast amount of unstructured data they store on-premises and in hybrid deployments that include access to public cloud compute.”
Chris Williams, vice president, infrastructure, platform and application as a service group, Alliance Technology Group, LLC said: “More and more, customers are moving away from proprietary platforms to open source technology and standard hardware in their infrastructure in order to efficiently manage the challenge of enormous data growth combined with shrinking budgets and staffs. By deploying object storage from SwiftStack, our customers have more freedom to implement the storage, protection and management strategy that makes the most sense for their business, but without the high price tag due to SwiftStack’s pay-as-you-consume model.”
