Encrypted tape access control via challenge-response protocol
International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, has been assigned a patent (9,141,819) developed by Bade, Steven A., Georgetown, TX, Dayka, John C., New Paltz, NY, Jaquette, Glen Alan, Tucson, AZ, and Guski, Richard Henry, Red Hook, NY, for a “encrypted tape access control via challenge-response protocol.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”Access to encrypted data on a removable computer media such as a computer tape is controlled via a uniquely-structured header on the medium having a symmetrical key wrapped by asymmetrical encryption plus a public key associated with the asymmetrical encryption. The data on the medium is encrypted using the symmetrical key. Prior to automated reading of the data by a reader, a challenge is issued to a host system including the public key and preferably a nonce value. The host responds by signing the nonce using a private key associated with the public key in order to prove it has rights to decrypt the data. The symmetrical key is unwrapped using the private key, and finally the unwrapped symmetrical key is used to decrypt the data on the medium, thereby allowing automated reading of the tape data without the need or risk of two administrators sharing a symmetrical key value.“

Linear recording executing optimum writing upon receipt of series of commands
including mixed read and write commands
International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, has been assigned a patent (9,135,949) developed by Shiratori, Toshiyuki, and Taguchi, Kohei, Yokohama, Japan, for a “linear recording executing optimum writing upon receipt of series of commands including mixed read and write commands.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”A method is provided according to one embodiment, which executes an optimum writing method even when overwrite is intervened between mixed read and write operations. In response to receiving an overwrite command while executing the mixed operations, which writes to a predetermined tape position, when a tape position to overwrite on is encountered before the append-written data ending position of the tape, (tape EOD), the overwritten tape position is regarded as the append-written data ending position of the tape, (tape EOD) to update the tape EOD by the overwritten tape position. When a tape position to overwrite is encountered after the append-written data ending position of the tape, tape EOD, the overwritten tape position is updated by the append-written data ending position of a non-volatile memory, (non-volatile EOD). The updating the EODs enhances the performance of the mixed read and write operations even when an overwrite command is intervening.“

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”A filled-gap magnetic recording head is provided comprising a flat or cylindrical contour head having a row of magnetic transducers in a gap region disposed between a rowbar substrate and a closure. The gap region is intentionally recessed to have a predetermined recess profile below a tape support surface. An electrical insulation layer is deposited on the tape support surface and on the recess profile of the gap region. Writing data to recording medium
International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, has been assigned a patent (9,122,425) developed by Oishi, Yutaka, Kanagawa, Japan, for a “apparatus and method for writing data to recording medium.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”A distance calculating unit calculates a distance from a current position on a tape to the end of the tape. A command processing unit receives a write command. If the distance is small, a determining unit sets a usable capacity of a buffer to be equal to a maximum capacity of the buffer. If the distance is large, the determining unit sets the usable capacity of the buffer according to the distance. If a capacity for data indicated by the write command is less than or equal to a difference between the usable capacity and current usage of the buffer, a buffer managing unit stores the data in the buffer. When the command processing unit receives a write FM command, the buffer managing unit reads the data from the buffer, updates the current usage, and a channel input/output unit writes the data to the tape.“
