Authenticating contents-protected information
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Korea Corporation, Suwon-si, Korea, has been assigned a patent (9,087,186) developed by Kim, Yong-jun, Yongin-si, Korea, and Hyun, Sang-hoon, Seongnam-si, Korea, for a “
device and method for authenticating contents-protected information.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”Provided are an authentication method that includes connecting an optical disc drive, (ODD) for driving a medium and a host device for reproducing contents stored in the medium using an interface. An authentication for reproducing the contents is performed by mutually exchanging data between the host device and the ODD via the authentication area of the ODD for storing the data. Accordingly, the ODD may convert a file from the optical disc, which is in an intrinsic format, into a format that is recognizable by a host device.“

The patent application was filed on September 10, 2013 (14/022,465).

Driving optical disc and optical disc drive
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Korea Corporation, Suwon-si, Korea, has been assigned a patent (9,082,451) developed by Yi, Ho-seok, Suwon-si, Korea, and Han, Yong-ho, Hwaseong-si, Korea, for a “
method of driving optical disc and optical disc drive using the method.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”A method of driving an optical disc and an optical disc drive using the method is provided. The method includes rotating an optical disc by a spindle motor, transferring an optical pickup positioned to correspond to the optical disc by driving a sled motor, and decreasing a current supplied to the spindle motor while driving the sled motor.“

The patent application was filed on February 17, 2012 (13/399,002).

Optical disc loading device, optical disc drive
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Korea Corporation, Suwon-si, Korea, has been assigned a patent (9,082,446) developed by Choi, Un-Jin, Suwon-si, Korea, Ko, Joung-sug, Seoul, Korea, Baek, Sang-yun, Seongnam-si, Korea, and Ahn, Cheol-woong, Seoul, Korea, for a “
optical disc loading device, optical disc drive adopting the device and method of driving the drive.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”Provided are an optical disc drive and method for driving the optical disc drive. The method includes transporting a disc to a chucking position where a spindle is positioned using a loading roller, blocking power transferred from a loading motor to the loading roller, and chucking the disc on the spindle using power from the loading motor. Accordingly, damages to the disc caused by chucking may be prevented.“

The patent application was filed on November 21, 2012 (13/683,018).

Disc chucking structure and optical disc drive
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Korea Corporation, Suwon-si, Korea, has been assigned a patent (9,082,445) developed by Park, Byung-yeob, Park, Seong-yeon, Hwang, Bo-won, Choe, Jeong-hun, Suwon-si, Korea, for a “
disc chucking structure and optical disc drive including the same.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”Provided is a disc clamping structure, a spindle structure, and an optical disc drive having the disc clamping structure. The disc clamping structure includes a chucking spring comprising a pressing portion pressing an upper surface of the clamper, and elastic portions surrounding the pressing portion and providing an elastic force toward the clamper. The disc clamping structure does not require a magnetic thrust as does the conventional optical disc drive.“

The patent application was filed on October 18, 2012 (13/654,648).

Objective lens driving unit and optical disc drive
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Korea Corporation, Suwon-si, Korea, has been assigned a patent (9,058,822) developed by Lee, Young-bin, Suwon-si, Korea, and Baek, Soo-hyun, Hwaseong-si, Korea, for a “
objective lens driving unit and optical disc drive using the same.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”Provided is an objective lens driving unit in which a wire holder is coupled to a circuit board. In a conventional objective lens driving unit, a connection between a wire holder and a circuit board may deteriorate over time due to a deterioration of the connection. According to various aspects, a wire holder may be directly coupled to a circuit board by insert molding, thus improving the connection between the wire holder and the circuit board over time.“

The patent application was filed on April 28, 2014 (14/262,867).

Skew adjusting apparatus and optical disc drive
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Korea Corporation, Suwon-si, Korea, has been assigned a patent (9,047,909) developed by Hwang, Bo-won, Suwon-si, Korea, for a “
skew adjusting apparatus and optical disc drive including the same.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”A skew adjusting apparatus is provided. The skew adjusting apparatus includes a plurality of skew support members provided on a base mold coupled to a base chassis to have an elastic force, and a plurality of skew screws configured to couple a motor plate that supports a spindle motor to the base mold.“

The patent application was filed on July 9, 2012 (13/544,183).

Optically backing up data
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Korea Corporation, Suwon-si, Korea, has been assigned a patent (9,043,566) developed by Jeong, Soon-gyu, Lee, Young-woo, Suwon-si, Korea, and Lee, Hoo-seung, Seoul, Korea, for a “
method and apparatus for optically backing up data.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”An optical backup apparatus is provided and includes an optical storage device, an interface module to connect with at least one type of external storage medium, and a control unit to back up data from the external storage medium to the optical storage device in response to an external remote control operation.“

The patent application was filed on February 8, 2012 (13/368,451).
