Lowering SQL latency by 98% using infrastructure level in-memory computing

PernixData, Inc., in server-side storage intelligence, announced that International Cruise & Excursions (ICE), in the travel and leisure industry, has deployed its FVP software to maximize the performance of virtualized SQL Server databases.

By putting storage intelligence into high speed server RAM, a concept known as infrastructure level in-memory computing, FVP lowered ICE’s SQL Server latency by 98%, while saving the company over one million dollars in storage upgrade costs.

Shane Allen, system engineer, ICE, was tasked with ensuring the needs of the company’s business did not outgrow the capabilities of the company’s storage infrastructure. As part of this mandate, he was tasked with ensuring that the company’s SQL server databases performed at their potential, even after being virtualized.

I was aware of PernixData FVP software and was certain it could optimize our virtualized databases,” Allen recalled. “However, before socializing it with the team, I made sure that there was an appetite to purchase after the trial period because I knew that there would be no going back – the DBAs would not want it turned off.

FVP is an infrastructure element of any virtualized data center. The software virtualizes server-side flash and memory into a low latency clustered acceleration tier that enables IT administrators to optimize VM performance while scaling-out storage performance independent of storage capacity.

Allen appreciated the ease and cost-effectiveness of the FVP software deployment: “We just used the RAM that was available in the hosts. That enabled the test to happen right away since we didn’t have to incur the extra expense of SSDs. With PernixData it was truly a no additional cost, no extra hardware trial.

Within a week of deploying the trial of PernixData, we had our production data warehouse environment on FVP and the response I got was, ‘Wow!’ [The DBAs] saw IO/s that were traditionally in the 1,500 to 2,000 range go to a peak above 15,000, and there weren’t any noticeable delays for data accesses. Reports that used to take hours were now completing in minutes! They could now run bigger queries and process larger batches. We were able to reduce the latency on the SAN, dramatically increase the IO/s and deliver great response times.

As ICE continues to grow in sales and revenue and its infrastructure matures, the company plans to install FVP in every VMware host to provide the I/O benefits to the entire virtualized environment.
