The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Perspecsys U.S. Patent No. 9,021,135 for its System and method for tokenization of data for storage in a cloud. Additionally, Perspecsys has launched a set of cloud control capabilities giving enterprises using the AppProtex Cloud Data Control Platform an expanded set of features for controlling cloud use in their organizations.

The patent focuses on a process and system associated with intercepting data requests to a cloud application, tokenizing the data in these requests in a token vault and updating the requests with the replacement tokenized values. The method also covers the reverse process – intercepting tokens returning from a cloud application, identifying the tokens, looking up the original values in the token vault and restoring the original values to the data stream with the proper encodings that enable presentation of the results to the cloud application end-user’s web browser.

Our latest patent covering the use of tokenization to maintain control over sensitive data is yet another important example of the innovations that Perspecsys has brought to the cloud security industry,” said David Canellos, CEO, Perspecsys. “Tokenization has become the de facto standard for securing sensitive payment card details in the retail sector. Perspecsys’ invention enables us to bring tokenization’s strong data protection benefits to all types of sensitive and regulated data across a diverse set of enterprise cloud use cases in healthcare, banking, manufacturing, telecommunications and other regulated industries.

AppProtex’s newly introduced cloud control capabilities, demonstrated by the company during recent RSA Conference in San Francisco, CA, give enterprises a powerful set of cloud data controls. Enterprises can use the platform to designate certain clouds as either approved’ and ‘disapproved’ for access by their enterprise users. They can also use these features to finely restrict access to approved clouds. For example, they can give access to clouds only during defined time windows or only from users in approved geographies or approved systems and devices. In addition, enterprises can use cloud DLP features to prevent sensitive data – like social security numbers or credit card account numbers – from being inadvertently sent to cloud applications.

Canellos continued: “Enterprises need a spectrum of solutions to meet their cloud data control requirements. AppProtex’s new capabilities complement our existing best-in-class data encryption and tokenization solutions to provide a broad suite of cloud data control and governance capabilities.
