Qnap QTS 4.1.2 OS for NAS
Installation over HDMI and adding Google Chromecast streaming
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on February 4, 2015 at 3:02 pmQnap Systems, Inc. released the Turbo NAS QTS 4.1.2 OS, introducing NAS installation over HDMI – a function that allows installing a NAS without a network connection, and adds features including VPN server support, VPN client support, block-based LUN backup, subtitle (*.SRT) support for video station and file station, embedding subtitles into transcoded videos, Chromecast streaming.
“We have made many enhancements to the business and home features in QTS 4.1.2 to provide a better user experience and to make the Turbo NAS a great companion in the workplace and for home entertainment,” said Willy Kuo, product manager, Qnap.
NAS installation over HDMI
Users can set up their Turbo NAS locally without a network connection: just connect a keyboard, mouse and HDMI monitor to the NAS, and the installation process can be completed.
“NAS installation over HDMI is a breakthrough innovation that eliminates many difficulties that users may encounter when initially setting up their NAS. No complicated procedures are necessary, no network expertise is required, and it helps users to quickly finish installing their NAS just like operating a PC,” added Kuo.
VPN options have been added: with the Turbo NAS being able to act as a VPN Server or to support a VPN Client for PPTP and OpenVPN protocols. This is useful for companies who need secure inter-office networking or to protect user privacy when the NAS is downloading data. Through the Storage Manager, administrators can replicate content in both file-based LUN and block-based LUN to various storage destinations to recover data.
Features for home entertainment include supporting subtitles (.SRT files) in video station and file station, and transcoding videos with embedded subtitles. The QAirplay&Chromecast app, available in the App Center, can stream media content directly on TV via AirPlay-enabled or Chromecast devices, providing users with options for their multimedia experience. Users can install Qfile and Qvideo on their mobile devices to flexibly stream media stored on their Turbo NAS via Apple TV or Chromecast.
Qnap has released Qfinder 5.0 for Windows, adding a installation guide to improve the initial start-up process and to allow Windows users to directly create storage pools and multiple volumes with Qfinder.
QTS 4.1.2 is available in the download center, and support for the following Turbo NAS:
