SSD Performance Comparison by Storage Class

2014 year end review by Calypso Systems

Calypso Systems, Inc. of Santa Clara, CA, released a year end update to the SNIA SSD Performance Test Specification (PTS) SSD Performance Comparison by Storage Class

This latest release compares the performance of various classes of SSD storage to the industry standard SNIA PTS. It sets forth a standardized test methodology, reference test platform, benchmark tests and reporting standard for comparing the relative performance of solid state storage devices.

The 2014 year end comparison updates performance of SAS HDD, SSHD (hybrid SSD/HDD), mSATA, SATA, SAS, 12Gb SAS, M.2 PCIe, SFF8639 PCIe and PCIe Edge card products. Measurements are reported for Fresh-Out-of-Box (FOB) random 4K 100% write IO/s, steady state IO/s for random 4K 100% read, 65:35 RW and 100% write, steady state for sequential 1,024K 100% read and 100% write and average and maximum response time for random 4K 100% read and 100% write for a single outstanding IO (or Latency at Thread Count 1 / Queue Depth 1).

SSDs continue to increase in performance with faster IO/s, lower response times and higher throughput,” said Eden Kim, CEO, Calypso Systems, and chair of the SNIA Solid State Storage Technical Working Group (SSS TWG). “In addition, the lines between classes of storage continue to blur as more advanced devices and systems optimize performance for specific workloads. Accordingly, SSD performance testing continues to advance with specific tests for enterprise or client class SSDs and tests which focus on specific dimensions of SSD performance behaviors.”
