Open-E, Inc. releases update of ZFS-based storage software JovianDSS.

The update of JovianDSS includes snapshots, clones and Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)  for consistent backup of enterprise-sized storage environments.

JovianDSS is a ZFS and Linux-based storage OS that delivers performance for enterprise-sized storage environments with unlimited capacity and volume size. The update includes storage features including support for ZFS snapshots and snapshot-based clones, CLI access via SSH, and support for VSS.

By implementing snapshots, users can create point-in-time copies of their volumes, providing instant backup that consumes almost no disk space. Furthermore, clones enable administrators to use identical copies of their production environment that consumes no additional disk space, and can be changed or deleted without affecting the original data.

Another feature in update (up02 b14241) is the remote management of storage via SSH (Secure Shell). Users can securely use the command line interface (CLI) to modify their storage configuration over the entire network. Open-E’s engineers included the VSS hardware provider in JovianDSS. This feature allows taking automatic point-in-time snapshots triggered by VSS – even when data volumes are currently in use – enabling consistent and nearly instant recovery of a single or multiple volumes. The VSS hardware provider is used in combination with a requestor application, such as backup and recovery. This technology, thanks to offloading snapshot-related load to the JovianDSS powered storage appliance, provides nearly instant backup and recovery of volumes running under heavy duty load production. Without it, backups which typically generate heavy load must be scheduled after-hours and would make backups almost impossible for 24/7 heavy load production.

With great pleasure, we present our customers with new features of Open-E JovianDSS. We are proud of the rapid growth of our software,” said Krzysztof Franek, CEO and president, Open-E. “By expanding JovianDSS capabilities, we are enabling customers to use a software-defined storage system that is extremely flexible, rock-solid and cost-effective. By leveraging many capabilities of ZFS in our software, customers can achieve all that – and more is soon to come. Our developers are already in full progress to deliver the next set of innovative functionalities.
