Hewlett-Packard Assigned Two Patents

Cooling in high-density storage systems, SAS drive system with failure information table

Cooling in high-density storage systems
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP, Houston, TX, has been assigned a patent (
8,898,682), developed by Joshi, Shailesh N., Houston, TX, Bargerhuff, Richard, Spring, TX and Giardina, Jeff, Cypress, TX, for a “cooling in high-density storage systems .”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “AIn one embodiment an enclosure for a high-density storage system, comprises a backplane to which a plurality of data storage devices may be coupled, a front panel opposite the backplane and defining a first airflow channel adjacent a front side of the data storage devices, a back panel opposite the front panel and comprising a second airflow channel adjacent the backplane, a floor panel and a top panel, a first side panel comprising an array of air flow inlets, a second side panel comprising at least one air flow outlet, and a fan assembly to expel air from the at least one air outlet.

The patent application was filed on October 19, 2007 (11/875,556).

SAS storage device drive system with failure information table
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P., Houston, TX ,has been assigned a patent (
8,898,514), developed by Myrah, Michael G, Cypress, TX, Natrajan, Balaji and Spencer, Brian M, Spring, TX, for a “SAS storage device drive system with failure information table .”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A SAS storage enclosure to provide storage drive information that includes an expander and a storage manager. The expander supports communication between initiators and associated zoned storage drives of the storage enclosure, and the storage drive information table is to store extended storage drive status information of storage drives of the storage enclosure. The storage manager is to store to the storage drive information table extended storage drive status information of storage drives of the storage enclosure in response to receipt from an initiator a SAS command to store the information, in the event that the storage manager receives from an initiator a command to exchange data with a zoned storage drive and then a storage drive failure occurs with the zoned storage drive. The storage manager sends to the initiator the information in response to receipt from an initiator a SAS command to retrieve the information.

The patent application was filed on June 25, 2012 (13/532,287).
