University of Oxford Chooses Scale Computing’s HC3 Hyperconvergence Platform

To build scalable virtual infrastructure in one science department

Scale Computing, Inc., a provider of hyper-converged solutions, announced that the University of Oxford in the UK has chosen the HC3 hyperconvergence platform to build a scalable virtual infrastructure in one of its science departments.

Shortly after implementation, Oxford’s departmental IT services team was creating time savings due to the HC3’s ease of management.

We wanted a virtual environment in which we could build and deploy a VM more quickly and efficiently, then get on with developing and providing new and better services,” said Peter Belk, an IT operations manager, Oxford. “With the Scale Computing HC3 platform, we have freed up a great deal of IT team time that we now use for resolving the day-to-day issues and addressing those jobs we had put off for years.

Prior to implementing the HC3 platform, the department had a SAN for storage and VMware running over the top of that, both of which required difficult and time-consuming configuration and management. Also, support for the SAN had diminished as the technology partnership it was purchased from ended. The IT team sought a scalable solution that would expand as they grew and offered the support they need throughout its lifecycle.

Scale Computing understands the needs of the small to medium-sized environment and offered a solution that is tailor-made for what we are trying to do,” said Belk. “The HC3 platform is a virtual environment at the scale we need, with expandable storage that will grow at the rate we want it to grow. If our users need more storage space, it’s now much easier and faster for us to provision it.

Belk’s team serves four sites in Oxford’s science area which are currently running 20 VMs but expanding to 60 VMs. They use the HC3 platform to deploy their services to those sites. The team is confident that as their needs change and more of their IT environment becomes virtual, the HC3 will evolve to meets those needs.

One of the reasons we went with Scale Computing is the company’s focus on continuous product development,” said Belk. “Its roadmap is always evolving.
