Symantec Assigned Two Patents

Optimized image archiving, shared data resource coordinator within storage virtualizing processing system

Optimized image archiving
Symantec Corp., Mountain View, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,838,542) developed by Robert Chester, Auckland, New Zealand, and Timothy M. Naftel, Longmont, CO, for “optimized image archiving.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “An optimized backup image of a VM is generated. The VM is associated with a virtual disk. The virtual disk includes one or more virtual volumes. Generating the optimized backup image includes excluding one or more invalid sectors of the virtual disk from the optimized backup image.”

The patent application was filed on Dec. 19, 2012 (13/720,364).

Shared data resource coordinator within storage virtualizing data processing system
Symantec Operating, Mountain View, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,850,132) developed by four co-inventors for a “method and system for providing a shared data resource coordinator within a storage virtualizing data processing system.”

The co-inventors are Poonam P. Dhavale, Kalaivani Arumugham, Sunnyvale, CA, Randall K. Shingai, San Jose, VA, and Ronald S. Karr, Palo Alto, CA.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A method and system for providing a shared data resource coordinator within a storage virtualizing data processing system is disclosed. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a first node of a plurality of nodes is configured to process requests to access a shared data resource on behalf of the plurality of nodes, where the plurality of nodes includes a logical volume configuration server configured to present a logical volume to one or more logical volume configuration clients. A second node is then selected from the plurality of nodes and configured to process requests to access the shared data resource on behalf of the plurality of nodes.”

The patent application was filed on Dec. 8, 2004 (11/007,605).
