Danish Randers Municipality Using Tintri T540 Storage Solution

Cites cost, space and capacity savings as key benefits.

Tintri, Inc., a producer of storage for virtualisation and cloud environments, announced that Randers Municipality (Randers), Denmark, is using a its T540 storage solution to lower IT costs, boost efficiency and help achieve its goal of becoming 100% virtualised.

Randers

Randers is the administrative body for the region Midtjylland on the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. It is one of the largest municipalities in Denmark with a population of nearly 96,000 and an area of 800km². The municipality has a goal to become 100% virtualised but with its legacy SAN not designed for virtual environments, the Randers IT team was spending too much time adjusting and maintaining the system to make it work for users.

With government data on the line, the Randers IT team was battling to increase productivity. When IT reseller RanTek A/S recommended Tintri, Randers made the decision to change to a smart storage solution that could support its virtualised environment without the management problems.

Randers has installed a T540 storage solution. Using its inbuilt automation, the Tintri VMstore understands Randers’ virtual environment and detects where to distribute extra capacity and resources to applications. It also troubleshoots delays, saving the IT team precious time. The Tintri requires minimal space, giving Randers savings in square meters, electricity and air-conditioning at its data centre facilities in Denmark.

Rene Demant Juncher, team leader for servers and infrastructure, Randers, said: “It’s a huge challenge for us if our storage does not perform optimally. Our traditional storage was not designed for virtualised environments. There were many parameters that continually needed adjusting and were complex to maintain.

He continued: “We were focused on finding a solution that offered high performance, simplicity, and minimal run-time maintenance. It took just a few hours to integrate Tintri into our virtual environment. We could immediately see that Tintri performed better than our traditional SAN, and as promised, it was simple to configure and maintain. Besides quickly delivering data to users and enabling us to utilise nearly 100% of our capacity, compared with 75% on our traditional arrays, it is also very simple to manage. With Tintri, daily storage maintenance and administration has been vastly reduced and we can now focus on development and strategy.

Doug Rich, EMEA VP, Tintri said: “The Randers project highlights the efficiency of Tintri in a data intensive environment. 20% of Randers’ virtual environment is already on Tintri and we are pleased that the IT team has quickly experienced significant improvements. Increased simplicity, far less maintenance, electricity and physical space savings, and a much greener profile will all contribute towards fully optimising the municipality’s IT infrastructure.
