One of the elements of Acronis’s cloud strategy is to enable MSPs, hosting companies and telecom operators to deliver complete data protection services to their customers, storing data in providers’ or customers’ datacenters, or in a public cloud.

BackupAgent, founded in 2005 and once named by Deloitte as one of the fastest growing technology companies, brings on board years of cloud backup expertise, an existing network of hundreds of active partners and over 50 thousand customers across the world.

Japanese cloud provider Tsukaeru.net, has been a BackupAgent partner since 2010 with thousands of users of cloud backup. CEO of Tsukaeru.net Jason Frisch comments: “I am happy to hear that BackupAgent and Acronis are joining forces. We’re excited to see what happens next, with the additional support, resources and technologies that Acronis can provide“.

Service providers will also benefit from the partnership between Acronis and Parallels, Inc., leveraging the integration of BackupAgent solutions with Parallels Automation, empowering Parallels-enabled service providers to deploy a cloud backup offering to their customers at a low cost of entry.

According to Parallels SMB cloud Insights research, backup and recovery is one of the top three most demanded services“, said Birger Steen, CEO, Parallels, “With this acquisition, service providers using Parallels Automation for cloud service delivery will now have the most complete and reliable backup solution to offer their customers.”

Over time, BackupAgent’s solution will be powered by Acronis AnyData Engine technology, allowing service providers to deliver new generation data protection technologies via a cloud backup solutions to their customers:

There are more than 2,300 companies in the world offering online backup in the cloud according to our database. But many of them do not use their own architecture and prefer to buy a complete software package from providers like Acronis or BackupAgent, the service being hosted by the buyer, the vendor or others (BackupAgent enables backup to Azure).

BackupAgent was founded in 2005 in Delft, The Netherlands, by chief commercial officer Roland Sars and CTO and former CEO Robbert van Geldrop and got $2 million in investment last year from Runa Capital and previous investor Solid Ventures after undisclosed first round in 2007. Moos Bulder was named CEO in 2007.

BackupAgent adopted an indirect business model from the very start aimed at telcos, hosting providers and cloud distributors.

Acronis and BackupAgent plan to merge BackupAgent Cloud Backup and Acronis Backup as a Service into one cloud backup technology platform going forward.

BackupAgent will merge into Acronis and the BackupAgent name will carry the Acronis brand in the near future.

Probably the most interesting feature for Acronis is BackupAgent APS 2.0 package for Parallels. The Dutch firm has also an integration module with Autotask's IT Business Management Solution, an Hyper-V backup and recovery plug-in and also a module for users of HostBill to automate the billing of their cloud backup service.

Acronis, with goal to reach billion-dollar revenue, is much bigger than BackupAgent, having respectively 4.5 million and 50,000 customers.
